My last load to the scrapyard I had a few lbs of #2 copper from plumbing fixtures, so I grabbed an extra 2lbs of copper windings from transformers. These ranged from super thin (human hair) to some decent thicker windings but my scrap yard would only pay me "refinery copper" price of $0.90 per pound. I know some scrappers get #2 copper price for windings, anyone have experience in this?

They are messing with your price because of the risk of loosing the pieces. (What? I have to find a bag?)

A long time ago I spent some time in Carolina when a primary buyer closed up (death in the family) and a new one had popped up for a few months. They demanded every item brought in under some dimension be in sturdy containers that would not be returned.

Everyone got involved in trolling them to submission. Every major store and shipping company was giving away gigantic boxes for weeks. Lmao! Think about a pound of aluminium cans in a 5lb 8’ tall refrigerator box.
That rule lasted about 2 months

Thanks guys, I knew it wasn't right. They are absolutely the best yard for everything else so ill bring it up next time and try forcing the issue first. As a woman, its pretty intimidating to question anything that goes on in there.

The only other game in town has a nasty reputation for ripping just about everyone off and they are super rude.

I want to add that it was customer appreciation day, so I got 2 bbq brisket sandwiche lunches and I feel like that evened it up.

At the yard I go to.., I pull the copper windings from HVAC motors and just leave "the majority" of the strings still on them, and it sells as #2 Copper.
I would bring it up in the office or to the manager about what you believe it should be and see what they say. Chances are the person buying your material that day was maybe a bit on the new side of working there?? But the good thing is, if you don't like the price, then don't sell it... take it home and throw right back in the same bucket for the next trip and on a different day, maybe different employee, you'll get it sold ~wink~!!

But never ever, not just at the scrap yard though, never let anyone try and pull a fast one on you just because you're a female... if your gut tells you it could be wrong, then it's a bad deal no matter what (sometimes even if it was a good deal to most).. If you don't leave a transaction smiling, then it was a bad deal IMO.
