Every now and then when scrapping something, I have come across this thin platy material. It is very shiny (like Chromium), very hard and brittle, and is strongly ferromagnetic. It breaks into very sharp shards that stick in your fingers about as easy glass. There is a picture below of a small torroid I smashed. I was expecting a ferrite core, but when it was hit, it generated a large number of shards. My question is 'What is this material?" I presume some Iron or Nickel alloy, but I am not sure.

Thanks!

It’s some sort of carbon alloy. There’s literally hundreds of different standard carbon based alloys used for creating ceramics for such cases. My guess here is a chrome inclusive, or tin. But I’m guessing.
You won’t usually find nickel in these. Grab the big pieces with a magnet (for steel) and vacuum up the rest.
