I may not remember the percentages correctly but I think common practice is brass can be called clean brass as long as it's 85% brass by weight.

I always shoot for 100% personally but it's nice to know I don't have to be perfect with it.

Paint won’t be an issue unless it’s lead
Same with solder.

Copper mixed in won’t work for clean brass recycling. You can quote it as such though. So mark/box it as mixed brass accordingly. And call to let them know.

To clarify
Brass with copper is not an issue for anyone anywhere unless their ignorant idiots or scammers.

Brass is a copper alloy.
I’ve been selling plumbing junctions (I’m lazy and cut the copper pipe at the brass elbow or split) for 30 some odd years as brass. Across the country and in other countries.
Nobody is gonna complain over extra copper in a brass buy.

Paint can be an issue in some locations as it is a matter of the end-buyer’s method.
If the end destination is a smelter and recovery facility the brass is weighted by volume to impurities. Paint is not gonna hurt anything as long as thirst not lead.

But if the end destination is a true refiner… paint costs money to remove and then and then etc.


I don’t think boardsort will dock you for paint, they definitely won’t for minimal solder unless it’s obviously lead.
They definitely won’t dock you for adding copper to your brass. :wink:

If it’s anything short of a bulk load brass is brass.
Paint, solder, copper… nonissue.

That said if we’re talking hundreds of pounds, or more,

Best to post a picture outside of what is it so I can take a look and reply.
Bs isn’t picky, but best that large loads be well decided before You send 4 trucks or a train car.
Or, a billion pieces of what-is-it.

Makes sense. Brass is a pretty forgiving material but the buyer/seller have to know what's there
