I would appreciate input on recycling LED's. I must note. Not LED LIGHTBULBS. See my photograph. It is a small sample of what I have. For reference. What is pictured is .8 ounce.
I saw a few You-tube videos of individuals who refined LED components. One did approximately 6 pounds of LEDs. He had cut off the leads( base metal) before refining. His yield was 3.1 grams gold. He did not mention silver yield. Also. Another. Individual refining. 1 kilogram LED. His yield .8 gram gold. But Silver 4.1 grams. Thier yields gave me a general idea of yield from LED'S. Not to be presumptuous. But I can see why LED components are not on the Boardsort escrap list. Just plain low yield for the effort. Thus. The reason for my post.
What is the future for LED e- scrap value?
Here to learn like everybody else.

The leads are usually tin or silver. Occasionally nickel. Rarely steel.


I cut the leads off and recycle the diodes in the led bulb bin at the hardware store. For me it’s the leads that are worth keeping. My yards will pay on most metals.

Like Lost' mentioned, the leads are what generate the easy money. Most are SN and AG, sometimes AG or NI. Cut the leads, accumulate a pile, and turn in.

Most LEDS have pure gold bonding too. SMD LEDS you can easily see this or the gold frame inside.

Most larger yards buy off the list items or specialty materials, IF they own an analytic/XRF gun. They can always give you a % of the market value or work with you to sell to a buyer for a royalty.

when i first got into this, after reading all of losts posts, i got excited. first trip to my local yard with a load of steel. i asked if they had an xrf gun. the reply was "whats that". not sure whose face had the strangest look because i couldnt see my own....

How to quickly find out if a yard has an xrf gun. Without asking if they have an xrf gun (many don’t know the name I’ve found).

Do you buy 600 series steels?
How about 1040?

If the answer is yes they have an XRF machine. A gun or a desk unit or a counter type.

Also, if they buy gold they probably have an xrf machine.

Xrf units can be as small as a handheld gun the size of a taser or pistol, to as large as a double wide refrigerator freezer unit.
Hand held gun scanners are about 90% accurate, in they show down to the 1% range of material. The larger ones use multiple simultaneous scans at different locations and angles. They are 99.9999% accurate

The appliance sized ones are extremely expensive and extremely accurate. One of my coin supplier has one at their main location. They use it to scan investment bars that tend to be as large as bricks.
