Two years ago, a local furniture and office furnishing warehouse was going out of business. A friend of man who does a lot of buying and selling and I went down where he purchased a few items. The floor workers told us they had to have the building empty by the next day, so they were tossing everything unsold into the dumpsters. I enquired about two large Sharp printer, and they gave them to me. The B&W works great, but the color printer showed error. Since the machines were 16 years old, I finally got tired of squeezing past them on the porch at my side entrance and took them apart.
Lots of brittle plastic. lots of tiny screws holding small plastic panels that conceal small boards. Good little boards, but tiny, but many, but lots of them for one machine. It also had a decent power board. It had a motherboard and a SeaGate 80gb harddrive. Very little wiring, very little metal, but plenty of boards.
Was it worth my time? If you measure worth by the money they will bring"? Probably not. But I learned something; I rested in the shade and didn't nap the afternoon away, and hey hey, every board, n o matter how small is "One more for the load, one more for the road. I'll add photos and listing of the boards later.

I've scrapped several pallets of printers. I can usually snag a surplus pallet (maybe 20 or so) for $10-20 and at that price it's a no brainer. I can scrap a printer in probably 10 mins and each one is maybe $2-3 worth in scrap so not really a lot per hour but over time it adds up.

Thank you both for the insight. My dad and I are always leery with printers. However, we don't reject them. We take them and recycle what we can.

For now I'm lucky to have a local guy that repairs printers. Believe he donates most of them to schools and such but if he's selling them, great!

Back when tiger direct closed its retail operations…

Long story short. My mother wanted a new mega tv. So I took her in and we went through the liquidation sale looking at lots of kool commercial back-end stuff. I wanted one of those no-ghost TV displays (the kind at airports and banks that hold a static image 24-7, never ghost, and start at $25k) and she wanted a printer unit. Both were not for sale.
We asked what we needed to do to make them for sale.
“Buy everything”

Mum and I agreed she’d write the cheque and I’d do the work for a percentage to flip everything else.
We bought the whole two floor store. Took almost five years to sell it all.

I still have all 6 of those displays and they still work. One day I’m going to put together a NeoGeo arcade unit using one.

The printer set (the size of 3 cars) finally died a few years ago. I sent a lot of it to boardsort and sold most of the ram and roms online. It’s amazing what you figure out being inside this kind of stuff.

Oh, and the tv she wanted, the boxed 80” 1080p? Died 2 years after we got it. Lol.

I’ll repair whatever I can for printers except inkjet. I usually donate standard laser printers to savers and goodwill. Multi-functions I sell and dot matrix I tend to keep.

Inkjet printers are just too messy and not valuable enough. I’ll strip the shells and grab the larger and easy boards to sell. The bulk goes in 10p garbage bags and I give to my large recycler who I know strips them down completely for total recycling, rather than shredding them and tossing most.
