I was wondering if someone could give a rundown on blank boards, not sure if that's proper terminology so... Boards that were produced but for whatever reason never had any components soldered onto the board or were largely unfinished. I am going to be going through some material soon and noticed there were some blanks so there may be quite a few for me to sort. Obviously, if I get stuck I'll post pics in the What is it? section.

I assume they wouldn't all just go low grade but what should I look for that would bump a board to mid grade or better?

Thanks in advance.

There are two types of blanks.
First and lest common is place holders. They are not only blank but devoid of any metals at all.

Second is any board that’s incomplete
Some are simply castoffs for one reason or another. An error in manufacturing or a cancelled contract.
Others are intentional. And not always truly blank. Such as ram blanks that have a single capacitor inside the board.
Blanks vary and excluding:
ram blanks that have their own category
Slot processor blanks that go as peripheral (have a partial set of finger connectors printed)
You’ll need to place a photo.

Well... Guess I'll just have to dive in and see what I come up with.

I was hoping there might be some general guidelines I could follow. Like brown boards always go low grade since, if it's blank, there's nothing there to bump to mid (though I didn't see any brown boards on top of what I have to go through). Or if there's significant weight to the board that might indicate it has more metal, then it might be something to set aside that could make a jump. Gold fingers on blanks I'll definitely set aside.

What I was able to see on my first perusal, there was definitely metal on the boards so hopefully no placeholders. Can placeholders go in low grade or do they have any recycling value?

Once I get into that pile I'll try and get some photos.

Empty brown will always be low.
Empty green will holes will also generally be low. Except for ram, peripheral cards, and server motherboards which will generally be midgrade. Often peripheral on the last one.

Placeholders are extremely unlikely to be found anywhere but by themselves in lots together.
They’re totally blank. Have no pin holes anywhere. No pads. Nothing. They may have corner holes for mounting eg motherboards, but generally they’re solid blanks with no holes.

From a scrap standpoint they’re just pure junk but if you take the effort to find out what it is from who... there’s some low level market for them on ebay etc.
