I’ve been taking apart alot of cd-roms lately and gotten wondering, what exactly makes cd-rom boards more valuable than peripheral? Is it just the pins or chip types, chip density? All three?? Just curious if anyone knows. If there wasn’t a designated category for cd roms I’d assume visually that they’d all go in peripheral.

The asic used in modern disc drives, match the quantity of chips on the earliest CD-ROM and Floptical boards. So chips
Thicker plating on thinner pins. So pins
The full implementation DAC. So type
Because Chris says so. So Chris
Lol

It’s more like splitting the top level of peripheral boards off as a better than generic class. Hard pressed to find anyone argue a cable box board is more valuable than a DVD board. The obvious discrepancy in value and a large enough supply causes some better sorting to be worthwhile. For all involved.

Optical and floptical drives obviously but other boards wonder in to this class as well. Most LTO tape controllers. The component board (vs controller board) of two board pre IDE hard drives. Some A/V DAC boards from stereo/studio equipment.
Some boards push slightly higher than the base. If enough of those boards come in Chris will eventually create a class for it. SSDs for instance will eventually have their own class or classes, for example.
I also expect LTO boards to eventually split off alone as pre v6 is now outdated and enterprise SSD prices are on par in retail price.
But ultimately there a bit more value to the weight and enough come in for Boardsort to separate them.
