I ran across a video about CD’s & DVD’s having some silver content in them? I have never seen or heard this before. If this is true, who would buy them are they worth the time and effort? Or just throw them in curbside plastics to be recycled?

Is it true? Sometimes.

Who buys?
Nobody under 100 lbs.

Curb?
No.

So in order:…
Silver was a popular choice until able ut 1994 for the reflective layer of optical discs in general? Including CDs and video games.
Most CDs prior to 1995 are silver.
Nearly all Laserdiscs.
Most VCDs.

Not VD.

CDs shifted to a silver-tin alloy in the mid 90s and then nickel tin, which most DVDs use.
…and yes,l; gold discs are real gold-22kt or better.

The current offset weight minimum appears to be Apx 110LBs in a buy minimum for silver discs.
Considerably higher int the 3000lb range for tin.

Don’t put them in municipal recycling. They wind up in the trash. All you’re doing that way is adding to expenses in the recycling process.
Every county:decision/parish in the country has at least one free electronics dump per year. Use that.
If you absolutely cannot hang on to them put them in standard trash.

No, it’s not worth refining on your own. Not even in Szechwan.

I seem to remember that they have a thin layer of aluminum in them, is this correct?

You’re correct referring to + media (I think, I mess up - and +).
Reflective laser guided media also uses aluminium.

Glass source discs use platinum 90/silver 10.

-ram uses uses a proprietary silver aluminium tin blend.

PCE/TG cd use a platinum aluminium alloy.

Am3/Triforce 2 discs are silver tin. A revision of the DreamCast alloy.

Neo geo used a bizarre mineral blend: which is why no home brew discs work on stock machines.

The PCE2000 from SNK took it further with the first and last and only refraction disc. But that’s pointless since less than 1000 machines were sold and only about 2500 discs exist. And they’re worth over $4000 per disc to collectors without case.

I covered this slightly in my History of A/V wiki.
It’s a lost cause for home refining. But in bulk discs are worth some money.

That's interesting, you just never know what various things are made of.

How I came across that video was: I was searching refining video's and websites trying to learn what various circuit board components are made of or what they may contain.

Is there some place I can go to that will help with identifying various circuit board components and what they are made of?

There was another user here that started to put together a book that covered components and design and materials.
I’ll leave this open and see if I can figure out how to host it.

It’s still very rough. But it has some good info.
I need to figure out how to pull it together though. Right now it’s a bunch of semi-collected different pages.
