I was reading about Dallas switches in a post then I found this IC. I am guessing the Dallas company made other chips besides the mercury containing ones. So is this a real time clock or something else ?

Not going to pretend I understand everything on the datasheet but looks like the 1685s-5 chip does not have a battery.

Batteries may contain some mercury but the mercury relays are different than the batteries mentioned in the post I think you're referring to. Batteries are fairly durable and can be safely removed from boards but mercury relays are less so and are not something you want to remove if soldered to the board.

This one is a bit later and depends on the board battery. Not a built in one. So it’s safe to leave on.

This is an exception to the rule of removing Dallas chips.
