Hey guys. Stumbled across something you just don't see everyday (probably because most of them are on the bottom of the ocean) and I could really use some help with pricing. Also am wondering if you (lost) or another collector might be interested. Thank you guys as always. If there is interest, I can post more pics.

You removed the warranty sticker! Good luck...

Not that they're in business anymore.

Anywho... search of sold listings on ebay found same model drive sold for $175 untested.

LOL... Wasn't I my friend. Unless I do a complete tear down I do not remove those stickers. I saw that posting as well on eBay. It is my opinion that he had it way underpriced! Anyways, thank you for your incite marked. As always I do appreciate it.

Well,‘someone did the legwork first. But sounds like a reasonable price. Maybe a bit high though.

Hard drive. Big company in the 70s making “secure” vibration resistant 12”, 8” and 5.25” drives

They’re not all that rare. Just rarely sold. Walk into any major, old, university computing centre and you’ll find them hooked up to minis. Large city bank buildings have them in the basement hooked up to DEC and IBM systems.
It’s more the fact that they don’t die. Some 40 years old and still turning away!

Heavy stainless steel platters with wide, spaced, tracks make it easy to repair in a clean environment without going /clean room/.
Single step hierarchal file system made recoveries simple.
And don’t fret too much about dropping it. Like old disk hubs, the heads park totally off the platters in most models.

DOA I’d probably have gone $50-$75. Wiped the disk, parted it out. Wait forever to sell the parts.
Working I’d expect $150-$300 depending on space, age, use intention, etc.

I couldn't either but the label was easily googled.

Frankly I'd take it just for the fun of taking it apart but I didn't want to deprive malphorian of that if he decided not to sell it to someone.

Thank you gentlemen for all of the information. In all honesty, I am researching this for a mate of mine. He is in another group that I belong to and he posted it as his next teardown. I talked him in to waiting for a few days to see if I could find out more about it and maybe find a buyer as well. When I first seen it I thought of Lost. After doing some reading I posted here for more info and you guys never disappoint! Thank you all again. :)

The case Tosses me a bit. Not one I’m familiar with. The ocean comment has me wondering, but CMI is well know to experimenters from the 70s and those of who who followed them on.
Their drives were a big thing for DARPA contracts. Again, tanks. They just don’t want to fail.
They also are used in both flight control systems and were used in data recorders before they switched to redundant flash memory.

First time I had seen one was in high school taking a college math course at the local community college. The head professor of the CRP there dropped an 8” at the top of the 3rd floor stair case and it tumbled down, bouncing off steps and walls, finally stopping at the 1-2 landing.
His only response was ‘grab that for me?’
And then I followed to watch him plug it into an NCR “portable” that weighed more than me, fire it up, and load a lesson schedule from the drive with a thanks
We’re still friend decades later.
