Hello again my friends. Hope all is well with everyone. Okay, so I am putting together a load to ship in (I don't personally feel that this is a good time to do this but I need the cash infusion and the room) and I have a question about some boards I am going to ship. The boards have a small "faceplate" riveted to them. They are High Telco boards and I can not afford the down grade. Will boardsort accept them as is or will I have to find a way to remove them to maintain the grade? Thank you in advance! Pics attached.

Those rivets are a bugger! I don't know that the faceplate will downgrade the board, but I always try to remove them. I use a drill bit slightly larger than the rivet and hope it drills through without catching and spinning the rivet. If it does catch the rivet and start to spin most of the time the rivet will drill itself out of the board anyway, but then you have to remove a hot stuck rivet from your drill bit. Hope that gives you the info you are looking for. Maybe someone will chime in and tell you it's ok the leave the faceplate on!

could you cut that part of the board off? i've sent in some boards with broken corners before, granted they were peripheral and not nearly as high grade as yours. i don't think there's a problem with cutting off steel, and bs might even appreciate it. do you have many boards with this faceplate?

if i'm wrong, someone correct me.

I currently have around 10lbs of this material. I am working on a way to cut out just the "tabs" that connect to the faceplate. I was just overthinking the problem as I usually do. Thank you for the input guys.

Its pretty easy to just drill rivets out.

If the faceplate bends enough to break off from metal fatigue that's also an option; make sure you leave the least amount of metal if you go that route. I don't do that unless I'm pressed for time and/or have no means of attacking the rivet.

You should only need to drill out one of the corner ones, then you should be able to just pull all the other ones through the board, and when you get to the other corner, you should have enough leverage to break the corner off the board. This should leave you with a clean board without excessive metal. You could also drill them out like I sometimes do with things.

I usually use a drill bit about the size of the rivet and drill on a slight angle this stops the rivet from spinning and is normally quick.

I’m so sorry. Somehow I totally missed this

The plate may, or may not, lower the grade.
From my experience it depends on who processed your order and the thickness of the plate.

I remove them generally now. The fastest method is two inexpensive purchases.
A mini nail/bolt cutter. And a screw extractor.
The bolt cutter makes very short work of the corners freeing the side ones.

For inside ones, Place the screw extractor into your drill/driver. Set it at medium speed. Drive it BACKWARDS. Meaning reverse. The opposite of the instructions. It will dig a hole through the rivet
Then just use a screwdriver and some minimal effort to pop them free.

An extremely fast and efficient way to remove those rivets (as well as the brackets on gold fingered cards that are rivetted to the card) is use a dremel with a metal cut off wheel. Shave one side off with the cut-off wheel and just pull out the rivet. Takes a few seconds to do.
