Would the board pictured qualify as "gold cap"? i am just beginning and have a lot of boards from older equipment that don't seem to clearly fit a category.

No, that board is not a gold cap. Check out the video explaining Gold Cap & Gold Edge & CNC boards https://youtu.be/L2l0WqUzHg0

So, are boards with TO-5 packages gold cap? This board has gold TO-18 packages but if those don't count then I am not sure if TO-5 would. What is it that differentiates them?

You do have what appears to be an board from an old HP test equipment.

The board has what I believe to be some 22 or so Tantalum capacitors. Which BS does buy. Also the gold cap, gold pin FETs. Not to mention the gold fingers.

Board could go as clean gold finger board. You might want to shoot Chris a photo of the board, both sides. See what he says. Might get bumped up from clean gold finger board. Won’t know until you get a reply from either Chris or perhaps Lost.

Nice board though!

Clean gold finger card. Despite the junk it’s still enough.
