Just came across this site and was fascinated by the potential value in my older computers. There's one thing I can't seem to wrap my head around. Google says that RAM has 0.03% gold by weight, which would put the amount of gold in a pound of RAM valued at roughly $16. If that's the case, how can the price of RAM/lb listed on Boardsort be so much higher, at $50/lb?

.03 ounces x 4000per ounce = 120 dollars in a pound of ram. Also, the recover more than just gold. There are other metals in there too.

We're all doing math different

0.03% per pound is

0.0003 * 16 = 0.0048 ounces

0.0048 * $4000 = $19.2

But my guess is Google is wrong. Boardsort deals with real returns on actual recovery and can set their prices accordingly.

Google and its A.I. get things wrong so often its not even funny. I have to correct the A.I. constantly with things from my main field of business and expertise.

Yes, we all have different opinions on the math with this subject! RAM gold content is 0.03% by whatever unit you use.

0.03 oz of gold times $4,021 (today's spot price) equals $120.63
0.03 lbs of gold times $58,639.45 (pound of gold price) equals $1,759.18


However, when I asked AI about ram, this is the answer I got. .04 to .02 grams is a lot different than .03% gold

The percentage makes more sense than randomly assigning a unit of weight. Because the percentage is a ratio of the whole and using a fixed number to describe the gold in a stick of laptop RAM and a stick of desktop RAM wouldn't work

My advice: never ask AI an question you don't know the answer to. It's basically just a word guessing machine. It's putting together text that *looks* like an answer, but it doesn't have some big database of information it's pulling from. It's just predicting what the answer might look like, one word at a time, based on text that was used to train the model. It's wrong 10-20% of the time. Especially about something like this that isn't a common topic of online conversation, it's worse than useless. (My spouse is a software engineer who specializes in machine learning, and watching the marketing bros convince the public that we need to turn the entire economy over to hallucinating chatbots is making him want to abandon society and walk into the woods...)
