So I get a lot of low/mid boards and unless I have several hundred pounds I just let them collect. At $.50/lb do you pull the gold pins off these?

It's 60¢ currently

I do my best to do zero processing of low and midgrade boards (aside from the necessary cleaning required by Boardsort). So generally the answer for me is no.

Precious metals is what takes low grade to midgrade, so if you have low grade with gold pins it should be in your midgrade but if you're pulling pins and that's the only precious metal then you'll be dropping mid to low.

Be aware, Boardsort will test pins with their xrf gun. So if they're coming from a board that is already low or midgrade it's possible the pins won't have much gold and may not be worth $5/lb (current price).

both mid and low are the same price so that distinction is irrelevant to me

I keep the pins to process myself and my thought is that if I'm getting low/mid price there's no sense in keeping the pins on the board.

For example: I've got tons of floppy drives and the boards out of these (unlike the sata DVD/CD drives) are totally blank brown on 1 side and only a couple ICs on the other. It's fairly easy to just cut off the pins so I was curious if others trimmed the pins from the low/mid boards like these

Floppy are high peripheral but have to have the pins.

I wouldn't de-populate anything from Low or Mid grade boards unless it has a healthy IC or two.

I would not continue to pull pins unless you really want too. The effort/to pay out, is not worth it. Always aim for Gold connector end, instead of gold pins.

There is a difference between Low and Mid. With non-ferrous metals being so high, they've been the same price because of those base metals.

To be honest, I’ve pretty much given up on that idea. On low- and mid-range boards, the gold plating is really thin. You’ll go through a lot of trouble removing it, and Boardsort will just check them with their XRF detector anyway and lower the price. Plus, a board without pins will immediately end up in the cheapest category. It’s better to just build up volume and sell the boards as-is.

If the pins are gold plated yes. I can only barely see part of the pins and they don't appear very gold but it could be the picture.

If they're not gold, midgrade and removing the pins for gold plated pins won't matter cause they aren't plated. But still midgrade because of the IC.

Thanks for the info. I assumed since the bottom half of the board was blank and brown it wouldn't be peripheral grade.

That is a good assumption. However there are always exceptions, floppy disk boards are a great example of that.
