I was partial to the Yamaha series of the time, the 28-bit ym3 series.

indeed, but with that card it does not matter all to much as you can just install ram and use a sound font assuming the game supports MPU or general midi. There are OPL sound fonts out there too.

On the topic of FM/OPL and midi sound, if you are into playing dos games in dosbox get VirtualMIDISynth and a good sound font, you can setup dosbox to use VirtualMIDISynth for midi sound. lot of sound fonts out there to pick form and many are pulled from different sound cards so you can simulate just about any card. The one I use is almost 2gb in size and almost sound as good a CD music.
