So I’m brand new to scrapping circuit boards and A good friend pointed me to this form for some help. I recently came across a pretty nice lot of circuit boards and it’s obvious for me to tell the low grade but everything from there is still to be learned. If you could please help me out. And identify what these boards would rate and tips on what to remove or to just leave them as is, it will be greatly appreciated.

To start remove batteries
Remove removable shielding

Never remove anything else unless Chris or myself told you to do so.

1 ... ah dell. Like HP they just can’t be normal. I’m guessing this is a 3:2 design I haven’t seen personally yet. The aluminium heatsink /should/ be removable. If so a good chance you have a CPU or ASIC under it in a socket.
Remove heatsink for small socket or metal socket motherboard. Whatever chip is under the oversized useless heatsink will be green fibre with or without metal, or pinless. (Unless it is soldered down which makes the heatsink further pointless!)



As a totally unique statement for starting off: this is a rarity from me. If the heatsink isn’t bolted, screwed, riveted, or some other form of strapped or stuck down. Hold the board really firm against a solid surface in one hand. Swing a hammer at the heatsink with the other. (Use reasonably caution for bystanders).
Dell is known for terrible thermal paste. Half the time I can literally rip the sink off with bare hands; no gloves required. . But I have only ever torn up one soldered IC on a dell board using brute force sink removal in my life. Their thermal past sucks.

Legal note: always use safety equipment like gloves and safety goggles. Lol

The heat sink looks like it is held on with a clip. The motherboard is either a small or large socket, I can see tan plastic under the heat sink. You could probably cut off the finger, but wait for lost to reply.

Possible. Anything is possible with dell and HP boards.

Ultimately I have no way of knowing till the HS is off. But yes AAK2 is correct. Looks like a lever with clips.

I did suggest attempting rational methods first. :)

#1, quite positive that mother board is a large socket mother board. It's a Pentium 3. Either a ceramic Intel or green fibre underneath. Should release after you unclip the heatsink or squeeze clip sides with fingers to one side and slip the left or right side of clip off the holder.

If**, you collect gold fingers, you're allowed to cut those fingers off carefully w/o degrading board.

Like Lost has mentioned, don't do any cutting, smashing, or remove anything before asking.

You can sell CPU and fingers separately.

You always want to separate boards if they're "plugged" into each other or like an add on card.
But if soldered in place, always ask first.

#8, remove the metal shield, carefully, and steel antennas. Indent the antenna with wire clippers and bend back n fourth, comes off easy n clean.Try to remove that excess small wire too.

Lost, that cordless phone should squeak into peripheral after removal, no?

I appreciate all the responses so far. I can see how this can become an addiction as well as making some spare income.

Question about picture number 8. How can you tell that it's copper contacts instead of gold? In my eyes in person it looks identical to the gold on all other circuit boards.

I was wondering about that, too. They look like gold contacts to me as well.
