Austin, thank you very much for your help. I DO appreciate it. I must say, though, that, in this case at least, as far as I can tell it was NOT depopulated. I took it directly from the piece of office equipment it was in and that's what I got. Also, found a few other items from this office equipment that looked the same way. I honestly hope someone in the group can tell me why? Thanks, again and God bless.

These two spots are the most obvious to me that someone removed a chip. You can see where the solder was and how it ripped part of the chips off. There's other signs of damage too.

Was the equipment pulled straight from service or was it sitting around for awhile before you got it? The former would be less likely to have the board damaged and I couldn't hazard a guess why anyone would do that but those two chips could have been gold tab BGAs. If the equipment was sitting around awhile someone might have been collecting them to sell ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you, Marked141! Yep, I never thought of that but 'm pretty sure it had been sitting around for quite a while. What I couldn't understand, though, was why someone would do that and then put the rest back in the case. I would have thought that, if they went to the trouble to remove stuff they just would have taken everything. Thanks. I wish I knew all the stuff you all know about e-waste scrapping!

If those boards were still screwed in thier original positions. And then you started to take apart the equipment. And you found it as it was. It is what it is. Clues. Dust. Cobwebs. No nicks on bolts screws. Also. Its a tough deal to pull a ,PCB off of standoffs even if you have the tool. And then putting it back. Fly me to the moon. The standoffs break. Fracture.
Marked141 is right on pointing out what he sees on the circuit board.
All I can say is this. I worked manufacturing. Stuffing PCBs with components to end result. Soldering. Testing. Retesting.
I said all this to say this. It is normal practice to silk screen and layout a particular " line" of boards. Just like cars. You can buy the lowest of lowest economy model. But You can buy enhanced features. On the same model. Air conditioning. Heated windows. Power seats. And on and on. Yeah. Give me a power window on the roof.
Ok. Where am I? I am thinking you pulled PCB's that are the basic circuitry. No added components That could easily be added because the silk screening and board layout are already engineered into the layout. For enhanced performance required by more shophisicated equipment. Soooooo. No need to add certain components. Hah. And what did Marked141 point out? Solder bridges and what not. Believe it. Those bridges do not affect the economical performance of a "bare bones " board.. Strange but true. The manufacturer's money is saved by putting out 1 board. With all circuitry. To go high performance. Then. Systematically. Choosing to populate the PCB or not. Again. What Marked141 pointed out is a good discerning eye. It's the only way it could be look at. But. In the original manufacturing process. Wave soldering. Testing . Inspection. Etc. Solder bridges. Etc. It don't matter. On a basic PCB.
So. Grumpygizz. What did find? ‐---------I already know I got a long post. Excuse me.
Here to learn like everybody else.

I always feel as if I'm pestering you folks when I keep asking what seem to be really simple questions but I must say I truly enjoy the comfortable "warmth" of this group! You give great info without being condescending and you make me feel welcome here. Thank you so much!

The more people know, the more people can scrap stuff. Which helps keep stuff out of landfills and creates "new" material resources which reduces impacts to the environment.

Helping people through the learning curve seems worthwhile to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
