Hi all,
I am under the assumption that the newer silver looking hard drive platters are basically aluminum and really not worth anything as far as precious metals. I have an old hard drive for a Data General server that has 11" platters. They look different like a gold color. Are these worth anything other than scrap aluminum? Thanks for your time.

Yes, late 70's early 80's from what I can tell. I would guess close to 100lbs or so. Never seen capacitors so big.

Not sure if I can find anything to tell you more but yes, that should have gold on the platter!

If it's intact there's probably a market for it.

Found this little bit of info:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19690&p=36374&hilit=gold+platter#p36374

You may want to contact Lostinlodos, I can't guarantee he'll be interested but he might be.

Thanks again for the help. I do always search for answers to my questions but sometimes there is conflicting information and it's great to have access to the information from people like yourself on this board.

He's been a little more active on every other section of the forum except this one lately so he may have seen it already or may not.

If you do message him his email is his username @ basically any email provider. Just let him know you were directed to him by another guy on boardsort and you can just link to this thread so you don't have to upload photos again.

I'd love to get a drive like that to take apart myself; always fun to see new (old) things.

Pm is disabled.

Just email me.

Lostinlodos at gmail dot com

These look like oxide on gold tin palladium platter.
Nothing really special unfortunately.
There is a group of designs (and I made Chris aware of them) from the 70s and 80s that have very heavy plate gold. They come from a half dozen production lines and really carry serious value. More than half are branded IBM and another quarter Mitsubishi. And they run a few dozen dollars per platter today.
This isn’t one of them.

If the size fits one of my missing formats there cash ready (PayPal or Apple Pay). Or trade.
I have plenty of weird stuff. ;)

I’m currently paying between $10 and $40 for missing hard drive platters and up to $75 for all disk formats except Twiggy ($$$).
I cover shipping too.
Email me.
