How do I tell which category of CPU this falls under if it says 940 is it a
i7-9xxxx??

All i7 XXX series CPUs are scrap value only (from Boardsort). That means all i7s with 3 digit series. If it was a 9XXX 4 digit it would be $80. Looks like this one was made in 2008 so it's pretty old.
