What is this chip and what does it contain?
It was found in a HP printer. The outside of the device did say that it contains a mercury lamp but i am not certain that this chip is it.

Not sure what grade it would qualify as. But that is a CCD chip from a document scanner. Looks like it has gold legs.

The mercury would be inside the CCFL lamp in the scanner head, not in the CCD chip. Just don't break it and dispose of it properly.

High peripheral.

Michael is correct the scanner portion of the printer will contain a compact fluorescent bulb used to light up whatever document is getting scanned.
