In house Plextor drives cost a fortune, they are hoarded, loved, and babied.
Every system I have that supports ATA has one. I swapped the drive in my Mac cube with one.

I’m not alone in my extreme love for these drives. My will even has specifics on who gets the drives and equipment with them. They’re not for sale.

When they were independent they were the last of thr IDGAF era of computing. Countries banned them.. Multiple states here did. Congress punted on banning them thrice.

They totally disregarded and bypassed any and all copyright protections. They read and process the disc at pit level.
They ignore multi faze (CRP by splitting the disc contents) recording limits and ignore the TOC.


Had no idea old Plextors were that sought after, gonna look twice at any optical drive before it lands in the scrap pile now.



me either, I'll be on the lookout for them now!

Few things get me fired up as a fan the way plextor can. They were truly the last of the don't-care hardware to be commercial. Unlicensed decoders, open source firmware and on and on.

Followed by a total flip of the script in, i believe 2006, where the new corporate bureaucracy started filing suits against software competitors. Then another flip when the hardware and software teams were split separately.
In whole or in part the company has been Japanese, chinese, american, and Taiwanese. Both plaintiff and defendant in courts around the world. All the while still making the most reliable disc drives. Even their SSDs were reliable. My 128gb still has 74% efficiency. 15+ years later.

For all the Jobs and Gates, Microsoft and Apple docu-dramas, someone really should do one on this company.


Btw quick correction. I believe i said LG above, the company merged into and became a branding of Lite-On, not LG.

I have definitely not spent as much time involved into computers as you are I can definitely tell... I'm more of a "knows enough to get lucky or going to call customer support" kind of guy with computers!!!
On a good note, it pretty much appears to me that every Plextor has their name big and bold right on the front of their devices, so I shouldn't miss it if I come across one. Pretty sure I've never seen one in person, not that I ever recall.


Plextor branding does stand out, so at least they're not hiding in a pile of plain beige drives. Still worth a second look before anything gets broken down.
