After a couple months trying( slightly) to sell a Brocade Fastiron setup, and some Dell items, I finally succumbed to the junkers urge and started boardsnatching. I will post pics later, but for now, am just reporting that it was a difficult strip. The metal case, weighing about 50 pounds was both screwed and riveted together. The power supplies and the boards in the slots pulled out easily, but were backed by a two pound metal plate on each. The main backplane board was firmly screwed into the inner dividers about 16 inches from both ends of the box, so that I had to pop all the rivets after removing screws. Then the backplanes had about 40 screws of their own. Finally got it out, and it was a full 1/4 inch thick board. Nothing on the back except the holes/ and on the work side, row after row of goldplate male socket/slots. It's too late in the day to try to describe the boards, so just wait until tomorrow for the pics.
Will also show the insides of some of the other devices before boards removed.

These switching systems are a pain. I bought one at a goodwill a few years ago. A large unit at 3’x3’x4’ but the payoff was good despite the hour or so it took to break it down.
Suggestion: get a 1/2 inch steel-zinc carbide or titanium drill bit. A decent powerful drill such as a Riobi or Milwaukee and those bits plow right through the rivets. A bit of counter-clockwise pressure makes the rivets turn into dust.

I considered the drill, but since this was an exploratory first of this style, I took my time, way too much time. I do understand that those who are scrapping on the dining room table have to be more meticulous than us barnyard mule kickers (No, I don't kick mules or other animals.) who can bust stuff with a twenty pound sledge rather than removing every screw.

Lol. I don’t think I ever reached that point of annoyance. ;)
I’ve tossed (literally) equipment out the window when it failed catastrophically which I then scrapped: which I guess is the same end result. ;)


Few printers met their end that way.

When your a retro hacker like I am; you don’t think about how much has gone out the window, out the door, off the balcony...!
It’s not the loss that normally gets us; it’s the cleanup!
Assuming you can lift it, toss a LaserWriter as far as you can.
Get back to me on it after you finish picking up the pieces.
I’ve thought about beating my C64 with a hammer every now and then when a ram cart dies; but never actually reached that point.

That said. I’ve yet to regret a single flying printer!!!!!

holly crap ..wierd that you mention that i just tossed one of those at a shed full of bumble bees at the farm last week them old printers got some heft to them.
