I have a stack of cooling fans from desktops and servers. The plastic cased kind. Does boardsort take these as electric motors, and if so, how far down do they need to be processed? All plastic removed?

I think it’s thats the first time in a while it’s been asked. Most yards take them as low grade or #3 motors.
So I forwarded this for an official answer.

Yea I tried searching but didn't really see any definitive answers, including how much plastic is ok.

I don't know what Boardsort would do with them, but my yard let's me put them in the unprepared sheet iron pile ( appliances, etc... which I think is somewhat close to shred).

Thanks for the tip. I'm close to boardsort so figured I would try there since I'm taking a bunch of other stuff. Pretty sure my normal yard wouldn't pay with the plastic on em.

I did sent this to Chris for a company answer.

I ship so I’ve not sent them in myself.
I remove the plastic housing so I can make sure it gets recycled.
Pull the wire (and the tiny board often comes with it) to sell for wire.

The motors are 3 or 4 at my yards so 4-8 cents or so right now.

I usually dismantle them when I get a pile.

The following doesn't work with every fan but should with most consumer PC fans. Once you get practice with some you can adjust as different fans present different challenges. This may not be worth your time; only you can make that determination.

Usually you remove the sticker on the back and you'll reveal the post (my terminology may not be standard) with some sort of retaining ring to keep it from flying off the motor. These can be plastic or metal with various means of removal.

I usually disconnect the wires here as close to the circuit board as possible.

Once the ring is off just pull the fan off, leaving you with plastic, steel and a some sort of magnet on the fan side. (If the fan uses bearings the post can be useful in pulling or pushing them out.)

On the motor side a set of adjustable pliers will help to pull the motor and small circuit board off. May need to twist before pulling. A small flathead can usually pry off the circuit board.

There may be a small (or not so small) bit of steel or brass left in the center of the main plastic housing or in the middle of the motor depending on construction. This may be able to be punched out or may need to be cut out.

So you should have:
the fan blade with mixed material
the plastic housing
a motor
a low-low peripheral grade board and
various steel and/or brass

The motor inside will be purchase as Motor/Transformer here but it must be completely removed from the fan assembly. Motor only.

As they are in the photo it would be considered rubbish at our yard and would have zero purchase value.
