I understand that Boardsort requires than fans be "completely removed from the fan assembly. Motor only." Does that require that the steel housing that several of the PC fans reside in. If that's the case, are there suggestions about how this is best done?

I believe that’s not the standard motor but a floating motor.
Personally that’s where I’d stop and send as a motor.

Under the board the centre post is attached to a star spindle wrapped in copper spools. Which sits inside a magnet glued to the steel shell.

Since all the pieces make up the motor I’d say motor as is.

That's helpful information. I really appreciate every bit of advice you've shared with my numerous questions. Thanks, again...

I'm not sure if rvanover posted about fans before or if it was someone else, may be repeating myself...anyways...

Inside the center you have a post/drive pin/whatever you want to call it that will have some sort of clamp to secure it and the bearings. If you can get that clamp off (may be difficult depending on the construction) you can get the bearings, plastic, brass, motor windings and circuit board apart from each other fairly easily. I will do this when I get a dozen or more fans that I can do all at once. The brass can add up pretty quick and is probably the main reason I take the time to do it.

Good point.

Another aspect of taking apart older fans of this designer is you occasionally come across cobalt magnets.
Yards that take them can pay quite a few dollars each for those.

***PSA***
I have a serious problem with people (generically) who sell magnets on ebay because so many fail to pack and mark the boxes properly.
Magnets with free magnetic charge must be stickered/labelled on the outside with the magnet label, handed to a delivery agent and segregated during transport.

Failure on the seller’s part is the reason people like me occasionally pay 3 digits for a vhs tape that arrives blank.

And if I ever find the person responsible for my IBM OS/360 on bernoulli disks that arrived wiped…— run you turd! R.U.N!!!
