I guess I’ll add that to my list of coming projects.
Give me a few days to find a phone I’d part with for scrap.

This is harder than I thought. Finding a phone that I would take apart rather than sell on ebay is difficult.

In reality, taking apart a phone for scrap is the worst thing you can do right now. The whole phone values are higher than the scrap value of parts. If you absolutely can’t, or don’t want to, sell a phone as broken online, then selling the whole phone at the whole phone rate is still a better choice.

Generally about the only reason to take apart a phone today is to sell working parts and scrapping damaged parts.

I have an old Samsung I’ll break down in a photo log next week and post in my what’s inside series.

And this is why you absolutely should not break down a smart phone. I had about $1.50 in cell phone. Now I have under a dollar from boardsort. And a mess of selling the other stuff.

The magnesium frame is the heaviest part. The gold connectors go in connector ends. There’s a bit of gold plate, a bunch of plastic, a screen I need to deal with. I’m out of practice on cell phones, this took about 15 minutes. To reduce my likely intake from it even with outside sources for some sales. So I’ve made
-$2.50 per hour. Nice.

So far I've only done ones I found on the ground already smashed. I have an old Samsung Seek (slide out keypad) CDMA phone, perfect cond. The battery even charged after 8 years. Not func. in USA don't know if I can sell overseas. Don't know y I didn't get rid of it sooner.

If you find a blackberry (original style), a Samsung data master, a Motorola razr, you have real bank. The first two have massive thick heavy boards inside. And the ratios pay off for stripping them.
The last has more gold in it than any post-lcd phone I’ve ever seen. Pins, contacts, connectors, wire ends, gold/tin solder… internal wires are silver. Crack open the lens relay and grab the mirror. It’s rhodium glass… 3 grains of rhodium.

But the best… evvvveeeeerrrrr…?
Motorola 90s/era brick phones.
Scrapped they’re worth about $50 today (late 2024)
They sell for $30-$>100
But they are easily found in yard sales from old(er) people. Often for $1-$10. (They still count gold at $40-something per ounce facepalm)

If you regularly travel out of country they still are made and in use in South America and the South Pacific. To the same exact standards.
The U.S. government has never complained at my valuation (resale of the phone) of $10 per phone.
Head to Argentina, Malaysia, Vietnam, or Saudi Arabia… where private sector analogue still exists. Etc you get my point. Fifty phones, $1000. Duty on import, $50
Scrap price, $2500.

That’s said… they’re one of the worst things to take apart time wise. Even in practice times past: take me 30 minutes or more for each phone.

Btw: that phone sells for $3-$25 in working condition
The mode value, unfortunately, seems to be about $8 working and $0.99 dead.
So Apx about $3 from boardsort
I know who I’m selling to
