If you remove the metal socket that MAKES it a metal socket motherboard, does it then become a green small socket board? Or is that considered tampering or removing items from the board that would downgrade it?

It’s still a metal socket motherboard.

The socket type is what makes the difference, the LGA (land grid array).

Removing the metal just makes it weigh less

Either way they are in the same category (Small or Metal Socket GREEN Motherboard), but like Lost said you loose the weight of the socket.
