Supplying to a small refinery here in Lagos as there aren't really any e-waste scrap yards. One of their requirments (apart from quantity) was to remove capacitors, transformers, cooling elements from the boards.

I'm mostly dealing with cell phone boards and laptop boards so i'm curious, are there any transformers on these boards? I've removed the capacitors from most of them but i'm not clued in on what transformers and cooling elements are.

I've attached some pictures of some of the boards. Trying not to make any mistakes that can be potentially dangerous.

On transformers there’s nothing dangerous. (Normally). They contain steel and iron that is hard on milling machines and shredders meant for softer materials. AND! They contain minerals and transitional semi-metals. Graphite, hematite, bauxite, etc. These are disruptive to chemical separation methods. Hematite and a few other mineral+iron based ceramics also have atomic realignment issues. In simple terms the crystals turn on a charge which can cause arcing in an electrochemical process.

For capacitors they’re only talking about canister capacitors. CMCs (MLCCs) can stay on. And should. The oils in canister capacitors cause issues for all recycling processes but especially refining.
Think about dumping a quart of motor oil in a paper shredder and then trying to immediately spread craft tissue paper. Instant mess. Same thing with capacitors. (That’s why shredder lube is so expensive, it’s designed for to not be
Static neutral and not be a wetting agent.

Cooling agents is a generic term.
Fans are obvious. Heavy plastic. Oils. Magnets. Ball bearings.
Heatsinks and shields off for the same reason Chris wants them off. Heavy weight of minimal value.

Finally there’s the risk of closed loop cooling systems. Some of which have exotic chemical concoctions for the liquid. On liquids see above. But take something like gallium sulphide and add it to hydrogen chloride. Stock up on body bags. Or magnesium fluoride. Add that to hydrogen trioxide tetracloride and enjoy the prettiest rainbow boom! For a few tenths of a second before you die from the sun-like heat hydrogen fluoride blast. No body bags needed on that one.

Cellphones often have a tiny tiny tiny lithium oxide button battery as well. Make sure you remove that. They go boom. Just look at my what’s inside threads to see the nice burn hole in my workbench one of those made.

And people wonder or argue with me when I try to deter them from home refining.

Thank you so much Lostinlodos, you've been extremely helpful as usual.

Regarding MLCC's, do you have any pictures so i'll know what to look out for.

Lastly, there was something about removing mercury containing backlights and components. Any idea what parts those are?

They’re little itty bitty tiny bread loaves or long stick Walker things.
The former have platinum and/or palladium. The latter tantalum.
As I said leave them on.

Finally Mercury is in old tiny Florescent tube backlights. Give me a moment to take a photo rather than looking them up.

Thank you once again Lostinlodos. You have saved a few lives lol.

The bits you highlighted in the pictures i put up (i've attached it), are those capacitors too?

I can’t be positive from the original photo but I believe they’re ceramic regulators.
Just rack them with a wrench or hammer and dump the powder into the recycling bin. Don’t use a magnet. I made that mistake once and ended up recycling the magnet. Couldn’t get all the microscopic dust off it. Just dump it.

It gets recycled as standard steel scrap by the municipality.
