I thought these magnets were neodymium

Usually, as in most, but not all.
Especially as you get back older. Cobalt was popular in 5.25” and 8” drives. And that’s a hell of a magnet! I have to put my foot on the toolbox to pull it loose.

Neodymium is the most common choice in 3.5” drives and many, but not all, smaller drives.
The little drives like old media players were often a magnetic ceramic magnet.

just bend the "backing" plate a bit with pliers - so that there is space where to put the flat head of screwdriver under the magnet - put it in and just twist it off - it comes of relatively easy that way. sometimes will damage the coating, though

That definitely works well for the larger ones. Sadly I tend to crack the smaller ones this way so I use the heat gun now.

And if you want to store them without worrying about the magnetic field damaging something

Too late for this I think. My old digital camera was sitting next to the magnets for a while and now the screen won't function.

Oops!
I’ve killed the screens of some old media players myself leaving them too close.
Scrap happens. Lol.

Seriously, sorry for the loss though. Good chance the cam still works though if you swap out the screen. Try plugging it into a computer to see if it still functions.

Lost, when you use a heat gun does it degrade the magnets?

They do sell on eBay in the range of $.75 to $1 each. That is certainly above scrap value, though they sell slowly.

The magnets also make excellent tool holders. Screw the ones without the tabs to a board and attach that to the wall above your workbench or wherever you want. The magnets will hold a lot - hammers, etc. They work much better than the magnetic tool holders available in the store.

It does work but I can't change any settings.

Depending on the value of the camera: you could look for one with the same screen size on ebay listed as for parts only. And simply swap out the screen.

I’ve done that a few times by buying busted lots and coming up with a few usable ones by swapping parts around.

Not that I can tell. And I’m below the melting point of the alloy. Melted glue and soft coating: So I don’t pull the coating off either.

I use them to hold equipment level. Large one are strong enough to hold through 1” of wood. And through thin drywall.

Great for pre-spotting.
Also make good tool holders as suggested. But I’ve pulled the peg board loose on large stuff like hammers more than once.
Make sure you reenforce your pegboard. Lol

My prefer is the nice neodymium ones. Old cobalt drive magnets are way stronger than any normal diy use warrants. You can literally slap it on the side of an old tower and hold it up in the air.
Great for erasing drives though!
Intentionally, unintentionally… lmao.

I know my picture is horrible, but it generally shows how strong the magnets are. I can even hold my 2.5 pound cross peen hammer with no problem on the neodymium HDD magnets.

How do you get the magnets off of the permalloy backing? They seem to be quite hard to get off without destroying either the magnet or the coating/ plating on the magnet.

Any pictures of the magnet pyramid? It sounds cool! ;)

Some have little or no adhesive and will slide off, some will still have a bubble in the coating so that given enough time it may expose the magnet anyway. I like the bend the bracket method then try and slide it (not pry up)

I was going to ask about a picture too!

I have killed a neodymium magnet from heat before. I was using the magnet to hold a small piece of metal I needed to heat, for what I don't remember. But yeah, if they get hot enough the sintering used to form the magnet breaks down.

I’m sure. I don’t use direct heat.
I know you can kill it using a torch.

They are strong though. The tool photo above is wicked.

Since we're on the topic this seems like a good spot to share some interesting magnets I got from hard drives, enjoy:
