I tend to smash them with a 16 or 20 oz hammer. Sometimes I use the claw side to actually break the plastic. I angle them on my vice and pop the fan out of the square housing first though.

I have a bucket full with about 10 pounds of small motors. I have not inquired if my local yards will buy them. I am hoping they do if not I may be holding them until I find a buyer.

For what it's worth, I do remove the blades as mentioned above. Sometimes there is no access to the clip/o-ring so I'll use adjustable pliers to grab between the blades and pry that off. Either way that whole chunk usually goes straight into steel. If there's a brass piece in it I'll set it in another pile to knock out later. Some fans blades have a neat 5 lobe magnet in there.

From here I can usually use the same pliers to pull the motor off the plastic. Sometimes this pulls the small board off too, otherwise I pull it off. If the motor has brass I set it aside to get that off later, if not it's electric motor at my local yard.

If the plastic has brass or steel in it still I check with a magnet, if steel I break the plastic post off and toss in steel, if brass I get all the plastic off.

I have some old circular bits for my drill. The kind for cutting plumbing and conduit holes.

Using a size close to the fan I line the bit with the middle of the fan itself and smack down with a hammer.
Alices through the fins and cross braces giving me a clean motor most of the time.

And nobody at my choice yards has ever given me trouble about a holy fan motor.
