I think it was autocraft-Ford who had sparkplugs with the word platinum on the box. I never assumed this meant they contained any platinum in the tips, but referred to their supposed durability.
Now I wonder. Given that catalytic converters use platinum, could there be a tiny bit of Pt on the sparkplugs?
Back in the 1980's a precious metal buyer (who later did a bit of government sponsored meditation time) offered to buy old airplane sparkplugs. I knew of an abandoned airstrip for small planes, and raided the junk pile in a gully where the mechanic had disposed of some stuff. Found maybe a couple dozen in total. At one dollar each (1980 dollars, ((3 cups of Waffle House coffee))), not really much money for time invested, but it added to the reservoir of useless knowledge.

My understanding is that there is. How to determine which ones definitely do or not...I'm not sure

Quickly take a look here at the lower part of the section:

Beyond that keep in mind that the ceramic is actually aluminium, u. Water use the base (metal shell) is usually zinc coated if not zinc outright. Rocket and jet plugs use a tungsten or titanium base.

My old gas dryer used platinum tip plugs. Many gas dishwashers did too.
Gold disappeared around the mid-late 70s in most cases.
