So I'm going to preface this with the fact that I don't ship anything that pays lower than CD boards due to shipping costs. So several of these items won't actually go to boardsort (unless something is worth pulling off a board), I just want to better understand what's here.



The CD drive, I had never seen before (or maybe once when I was really young). Thought I'd share the drive pics for fun but then also, is the board good for CD board category?



The small board next to the CD board I believe came out of the same drive, can it go GFC?

Top right was a floppy drive, can't remember which category I've seen the smaller ones that are brown and green on either side go, does this particular type get a better grade?

The motor on the other CD board, lower right, should be removed?

The other three lower left I would assume are good for HDD boards? I'm fairly certain two if not all three were on Tape Drives (I took them apart so long ago I can't remember now) and don't know if tape drives are too different to go in the same category.




Specifically wondering about the chips with the glass on these. I think I may have asked about something similar before but don't remember now. Obviously there's some visible gold and gold legs on some of the chips, are they all some kind of DLP chip?


The white ceramic component caught my curiousity. Is that component really a gas tube or is it just a label stating what it controls?



The chips on this board were really what I was interested in, hadn't seen the white ones before and the black one appears to have gold legs. Any thoughts on these? Back of the board is unpopulated.



I asked before about the board but not the ceramic chips. I had one fall off of a board, do they have value on their own, what category if so?


Walkie Talkies, looks like a lot of plating on them, for some reason I decided not to tear them down further after I got the housing off, any thoughts on these?



Printer scanners. Mostly I have the green ones but also a few ceramic. The small wires you can see running from the board to the (???) long shiny thing; is that a chip (???) are those gold wires?



The ICs on these (minus the lower right board) was what mainly caught my eye. Also the top right has a second smaller board attached to some pins and can be pulled off. Any thoughts on any of these?

Looks like digital camera boards. The chips are IC class. Boards are peripheral if you remove the metal brackets and wires.


Low grade. As for the “tube” GAS≊GaSe, the material type.

Low telco. Very old IC design. Not much value difference though. Go as stand ceramics with gold pins, or pinless if not gold or without pins.

Thanks again lostinlodos. So GaS is Gallium Sulfide, used as a semiconductor. Man, knowing what things are called sure helps when googling :)

Just to clarify, do the electric motors on the CD boards make a difference for the category?

and

Those three, in the bottom left of the picture you wrote in CD and P, that I think may be from tape drives, are they missing something to go up to HDD boards?

Could be Ga S or Ga Se

The motor should come off

Yes. Very different chips vs hard drive boards. Tape and MO controller boards are almost universally cd/dvd class.

Going to add a few more pictures if my photos will cooperate... Hopefully adding to the thread I had going already is okay, I'm going to try and get through a pile of boards I've been too lazy to take pics of.

Group of boards



Two small boards mostly just pins, I've gotten away with putting things like this with my regular backplanes at a more local yard.




Got a few of these boards and the red capacitor was concerning me. I was able to google and identify it's a capacitor but I've had other boards with less common (to me) capacitors that I wonder if they're batteries. Usually if I'm not 100% sure it isn't a battery I just remove it but I want to be better at recognizing the difference. Aside from the board or component being labeled are there any other things to look for to help differentiate capacitors from batteries when those components are similar?

Bird with fingers is clean gold finger card. Long skinny one is midgrade. Rest peripheral

The board is midgrade. Batteries are usually but not always marked. Practice is honestly the best way. Given that both batteries and capacitors are marked with - and +.
You can look up the ID or part number.
When in doubt I cut it. Tape it up. And toss it in my dry cell hazmat. Here maxcap gives it away. ;)

Just saw your B O A R D reply... No worries I automatically read it as boards, though I was wondering why they were chirping. :P

Anywho, got a few more birds for you or whoever gets here first:


This one had a SIM card and a metal shield, pins on the back don't appear to have any gold. This prompts a couple of questions I'm not sure I've asked. 1) Metal shields, sometimes have a lid that detaches pretty easily but will leave behind a fence or wall around whatever is being shielded, does that fence need to be removed too or can it be left on the board? 2)Gold pins, are they always gold in color or are different types of gold (white?) sometimes used?


Number 2, has ICs and a double row of pins that resemble the end of an IDE type cable.


Number 3, also had a SIM card and metal shield. When I removed the shield for the photo, one corner of the square all the chips are on started to separate from the rest of the board. I have several more to pull shields off of, if I accidentally pull those chips what would each part be classified as?



Number 4(b), the green wire clamp (whatchamacallit?) pulls right off so that's not there anymore, if it makes a difference. Tried to take a second photo to show whats on the four upright boards.


Number 5, again green wire clamp I already pulled.


Number 6, pins in the green port appear to just be nickel plated, the off-white port is gold plated. And some ICs.

After I posted the last set I realized Lostinlodos had pinned a topic to help him get through these identifications easier... My apologies I didn't realize there was a new pin.

I'll try to keep my posts shorter in the future. If the photos are turning out alright I will forego adding any description and just ask questions as I think of them.
