The kits start around $20. Average about $50to grind plastic, paper, light metals .
I’ve never built one myself but have purchased pre-made from acquaintances.

Sadly the high end of the low end crap prebuilt branded stuff is just as good as byo. I have a top of the line Amazon basics I use for shredding boards and ICs for refining. (Shut up I didn’t say that won’t talk about it nope go away). Costs the same as a top line diy and comes with its own motor and a bin.

On the lower end it’s a good idea, diy and a hand crank. I rigged a kit up with an electric motor from a lawnmower. Mostly I use it to shred tinned al (think drink cans but more related too). Which gains me about 25% more room per compactor bag full.

Still want a super GWI box shredder though. But they cost $25k and I’ll buy a new xrf gun before I buy a shredder. These are the ones used in the does it shred and satisfying shredder channels on YouTube

An online auction I pay my monthly tribute to often has a huge commercial shredder pass thru. Usually not fully operational, and goes for scrap metal prices. I generally try to get a bid of $25-$50 in, until I realize this is a 16 or twenty foot long machine, (size is exaggerated for dramatic effect. Sometimes they are only 10 feet long and 9 feet high. Not exactly the size you want in your basement.
